AVW Controls Ltd - Press Release - September 2005
Kings Theatre, Southsea

This dignified and beautiful theatre - with its Italian Renaissance style of decor - is one of the best examples of the elegant Edwardian playhouses to be found in the British Isles. It is the result of the vision and business acumen of John Walter Boughton and the architectural prowess of Frank Matcham, the greatest British theatre architect.

This theatre has served the citizens of Portsmouth and the surrounding area for 98 years. A programme of work costing over £3 million has recently started, aided by funds from both Hampshire and Portsmouth Councils.

One of the requirements of the modernisation of this theatre, determined by respected theatre consultants Carr and Angier,  is to install a powered flying system whilst retaining the roof structure of this heritage building. This will enable the theatre to attract some of the larger UK touring productions; much to the benefit of the local population.

AVW Controls were awarded the control system sub-contract by the main stage engineering contractor MRL Systems Ltd to provide the automation for the new powered flying system.

The flying system hoists are of a helical groove drum type with a 7.5kW AC motor gearbox with dual silent brakes designed by MRL Systems Ltd and have a 400Kg dynamic load capacity with a 1.8 meter per second top running speed. AVW provided the award winning Impressario motion control system to power and control an initial six hoists with firm plans to power a further fifteen over the next few years.

AVW are particularly delighted to be providing an Impressario control system for a regional theatre; proving that advanced stage automation is not just the preserve of large state funded opera houses but is truly available to all.
